Abstract
PURPOSE:To reduce off-axial errors and enable connection of low losses to be readily accomplished by fixing the strands of optical fibers to multiple grooves and cutting the substrate with a cutting grindwheel parallel to the cutting grooves. CONSTITUTION:Marshalling grooves 15, axial aligning grooves 16, cutting grooves 17, protrusions 18 and adhesive agent extruding grooves 18 are worked on a silicon wafer, after which this is cut out to make a connecting substrate 14. While bare optical fibers 20 are being put into the grooves 15 from both ends in the axial direction of the substrate 14, they are butted to the protrusions 18, thence adhesive agents are filled in the spacings and are fixed by a retainer plate 22. The substrate 14 is then cut and ground with a cutting grindwheel 26 which has a width slightly wider than the spacing of the grooves 17 and being rotated by a shaft 17. The end face treatment by this cutting enables higher performance of the connecting work to be obtained.
