Abstract

PURPOSE: To evenly distribute light signal waves and achieve the improvement in the reliability to mechanical strength by providing the coreless columnar optical materials formed to a relatively small taper ratio.
CONSTITUTION: Unit fibers 2 and 4 are constituted by fusion-bonding optical fibers 1a and 1b, 3a and 3b to the respective both ends of different columnar optical materials. While the fibers 2 and 4 are being heated to fuse, they are elongated on both directions of input ports 5 and output ports 6 to form straight parts 7a, 7b, tapered parts 8a, 8b and mixed part 9, whereby these are thermally fusion-bonded to a biconical taper shape. The incident light signal from the ports 5 is transmitted up to the tapered part 8a while making total reflection at the boundary faces of the core 11 and clad 12, and the light signal of lower order modes propagates evenly in the fusion-bonded part 10A and mixing part 9, radiates the tapered part 8b and is then transmitted to the parts 6.
