Abstract

PURPOSE: To separation-recover high purity Co by selectively extracting Co from a Ni and Co-contg. soln. with an org. solvent and back-extracting the Co in the solvent with an aq. mineral acid soln. while controlling the pH value of the soln. to a certain range.
CONSTITUTION: Ni and Co-contg. raw material is treated with an acid soln. to extract the Ni and Co into the aq. soln. This Ni and Co-contg. soln. is contacted to an org. solvent prepared by diluting an alkylphosphonic acid monoalkyl ester of formula I (where R1 and R2 are same or different 8W10C alkyl) with kerosine or the like to preferentially extract the Co. At this time, metal ions such as Cu and Zn ions in the soln. are also extracted into the solvent phase. This phase is then treated with an aq. soln. of a mineral acid such as HCl or H2SO4 to back-extract the Co. By adjusting the soln. to pH 1.5W3.5 Co alone is back-extracted as high purity Co. The residual solvent is washed with a mineral acid soln. of pH<1.0 to extraction-remove the Cu, Zn, etc., and the washed solvent is recycled as a selectively extracting soln. for a Ni and Co-contg. aq. soln.
