Abstract

PURPOSE: To remove formic acid and regenerate an organic solvent, by bringing an aqueous solution containing formic acid into contact with the organic solvent containing an extracting agent selected from an amine and a phosphoric ester diluted with kerosine, etc., extracting the formic acid, and bringing the resultant extract into contact with sulfuric acid.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution containing formic acid is brought into contact with an organic solvent obtained by diluting an extracting agent selected from an amine selected from a primary amine to a quaternary amine and a phosphoric ester with a petroleum hydrocarbon diluting agent to extract the formic acid selectively. The organic solvent extracted with the formic acid is then brought into contact with sulfuric acid or distilled under heating to strip the formic acid, regenerate the organic solvent simultaneously and seperate the organic acid. An aqueous solution containing the formic acid and acetic acid is extracted with an amine extracting agent to remove the acetic acid, and the same operations as described above are carried out to regenerate the organic solvent and extract the acetic acid from the remaining aqueous solution with the phosphoric ester extracting agent. Thus, the formic acid and the acetic acid are separated and recovered.
