Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover iron in a zinc residue as iron oxide for a ferritic magnetic material, by adding a preliminary neutralizing step of specific conditions to the hematite method, and purifying the resultant iron oxide through leaching under pressure and roasting.
CONSTITUTION: An acid leachate from a residue of zinc leaching obtained in the wet zinc refining is neutralized with a neutralizing agent, e.g. Ca(OH)2, to a pH of 4W5. Thus, impurities, e.g. Ga, In, Al or Si, are removed by precipitating with gypsum with a high efficiency. The SiO2 removal ratio can be increased with increase in pH; however, the pH value described above is kept to maximize the ratio of the remaining Zn. The resultant solution after removing the precipitate is subjected to the arsenic removal in the presence of H2S or copper by adding zinc dust, etc. thereto. The solution after separating the precipitate of the arsenic compound is then oxidized at the total pressure of 16W20kg/cm2.G and a temperature of 180W200°C to precipitate the iron oxide. The resultant iron oxide is washed under pressure with hot water at 170W200°C to elute impurities, e.g. Zn, Na, or K. The iron oxide is then oxidized by roasting at 700W1,000°C, desulfurized and pulverized to give the aimed product.
