Abstract

PURPOSE: To recover acrylic acid advantageously in extracting an aqueous solution containing the acrylic acid with a high-boiling organic extracting agent, by using a tertiary amine and an oxygen-containing organic solvent together.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution containing acrylic acid is extracted with an organic extracting agent having a higher boiling point than the acrylic acid. In the process, a tertiary amine, preferably about 12W40C tertiary amine, e.g. trioctylamine, and an oxygen-containing organic solvent, e.g. ketone, alcohol, carboxylic ester or phosphoric ester such as 3,3,5-trimethylcyclohexanone, are used together to extract the acrylic acid from the aqueous solution with a high apparent distribution coefficient and make the recovery of the acrylic acid from a dilute aqueous solution thereof. The acrylic acid is recovered from an aqueous solution of higher concentration economically and in high yield.
