Abstract
PURPOSE:To maintain the adequate thickness of powder layer and continuously cast the slab of good quality by controlling the charging amount of the powder being sprayed to molten steel surface through the use of a level gauge using gamma rays and an eddy current type range finder. CONSTITUTION:The level signal corresponding to the level of a powder layer 6 is outputted from a gamma ray source vessel 7 in which radioactive material is disposed above and below with the reference surface level of the powder layer 6 as a center, a scintillator 9 and rate meter 10 and is compared with the level signal output of an eddy current type range finder 14 by a comparator 13. The level signal output corresponding to the level of the molten steel surface is sent from the detecting part 16 installed above the molten steel surface in the mold is sent to a comparator 13 with the eddy current type range finder 14, whereby the differential signal from the signal output from the foregoing level gauge is obtained and his is sent to a computer 17 to compute the powder feed rate corresponding thereto. The calculated value is then sent to a powder supply control unit 18 which in turn operates an automatic powder feeder 19 to supply the correct amount of powder.
