Abstract

888,927. Automatic level control systems. UNITED STEEL CO'S. Ltd. June 4, 1959 [June 11, 1958], No. 18685/58. Class 38 (4). [Also in Groups XXII and XL (b)] An indicator for the level of molten metal in a vertical water-cooled mould 1 during a continuous casting process comprises a source of gamma rays 19 and a gamma-ray detector 21 carried respectively by chains 11, 12 (counterbalanced by weights 24) on opposite sides of the mould and arranged to be moved together vertically under the control of a reversible motor 17. When the source and detector move past the region 34 (Fig. 4), between the full mould and the incoming stream 38 of molten metal the variation in the output signal of the detector is utilized (via a servo control circuit, Fig. 6, not shown) to stop the motor 17. If the level of region varies 34 (e.g. due to variations between the rates of pouring the metal 38 and of extracting the billet from the lower end of the mould) the servo system operates to cause the source and detector to vary in a similar manner a visible pointer moving with the source and detector indicating the position of the level. Alternatively, the signal output of the detector may be employed to produce an indication of the rate and direction of movement of the level and additionally may be utilized to control the pouring and withdrawal devices. The source 19 may comprise a radio-active cobalt 60 wire 27, Figs. 4 and 5 (or a line deposit of caesium 137 on silver) contained in a lead shield 25 slotted at 26 and covered by a steel case 28 and the detector 21 may comprise a sodium iodide crystal 30 in a lead and steel casing 29, 33 slotted at 32.
