Abstract

PURPOSE:To prevent the surface cracking of an ingot owing to powder deficiency by detecting the residucal amts. of the mold powder in various parts in the mold of a continuous casting device and adjusting the amt. of the powder in the mold uniformly over the entire surface in accordance with these. CONSTITUTION:Molten steel 11 is supplied from a tundish 1 through an immersion nozzle 2 into a mold 3 for continuous casting, whereby an ingot is cast continuously. In this case, mold powder 9 is supplied from a hopper 4 to the surface of the steel 11, and the residual amt. thereof is detected through scanning of the powder surface by an IR light quantity detector 5. The deteced quantity of the IR light is converted to a voltage by an A/D converter 12 and in a controller 13, a driving motor 10 of a rotary feeder 6 for supplying the powder is driven and controlled by the difference therebetween so that the much powder is supplied to the parts where the amt. of the powder is small, whereby the thickness of a powder layer 9 is made uniform on the surface of the steel 11 and the surface cracking of the ingot owing to powder defficiency is prevented automatically.
