Abstract
PURPOSE: To advantageously decompose an aq. soln. contg. ammonium nitrate on an industrial scale by electrolytically reducing the soln, in a cell; heating the resulting soln. outside the cell to remove nitrogen and water formed; and returning the remainder to the cell.
CONSTITUTION: An aq. soln. contg. ammonium nitrate is fed into cathode chamber 8 of electrolytic cell 7 and electrolytically reduced while supplying an adequate amt. of nitric acid. The resulting aq. soln. contg. ammonium nitrite is passed through a pH adjusting vessel and fed into thermal decomposition tower 11 at a constant rate. In tower 11 the soln. is thermally decomposed, and nitrogen and water formed are removed from the top of tower 11. The remaining soln. is passed through pH adjusting vessel 2 and filtration system 3, and returned to chamber 8 of cell 7 together with a fresh aq. soln. of ammonium nitrate to continue electrolytic reduction.
