Abstract
PURPOSE: To advantageously produce H2 from water by obtaining H2 and Br2 by the electrolysis of an aqueous HBr soln., reacting the Br2 with As2O3 to obtain HBr and arsenic acid, forming As2O3 and water by the thermal decomposition of the arsenic acid, and returning each component to each process.
CONSTITUTION: Said H2 producing processes (a)W(c) are represented by the equations. HBr obtd. in the process (b) is circulated to the process (a), and As2O3 obtd. in the process (c) to the process (b). Br2 formed in the process (a) and H3AsO4 formed in the process (b) are used in the process (b) and the process (c), respectively. As a result, water is decomposed into O2 and H2. In the process (a) an electrolytic cell with anodic and cathodic sections divided by a diaphragm is used, H2 is produced on the cathode by electrolysis, and Br2 dissolved in the anolyte is separated and fed to the process (b). The thermal decomposition of arsenic acid in the process (c) is carried out at 750W800°C. As2O3 as a decomposition product sublimes and deposits on the low temp. part of the reactor, so it is separated and returned to the process (b). On the other hand, O2 is taken out.
