Abstract

1456874 Producing sodium chlorate electrolytically PENNWALT CORP 13 June 1974 [6 July 1973] 26289/74 Heading C7B Sodium chlorate is produced by electrolyzing an aqueous NaCI solution at above 50‹C until the product electrolyte solution contains at least 30g/l NaCl (but below saturation) with a NaClO 3 : NaCl weight ratio in the range 5 to 27:1, withdrawing the product electrolyte solution from the electrolysis cell as effluent and concentrating it by evaporation under reduced pressure e.g. at a vacuum level above 26 inches of mercury at above 50‹C to crystallize out the NaClO 3 . After recovery of the solid NaClO 3 the mother liquor produced e.g. by filtration or centrifugation and wash water from the chlorate crystals are preferably recycled to the cell.
