Abstract

PURPOSE: To purify an electrolytic brine without adversely affecting phosphoric acid, by reducing the pH of a brine containing the phosphoric acid (salt), adding calcium chloride thereto, and removing sulfate radicals as calcium sulfate.
CONSTITUTION: Hydrogen chloride is added to a brine returned from an electrolytic cell to reduce the pH to 4 or below, and then passed through a dechlorinating step (A) by blowing air (A') thereinto. The brine after the dechlorinating step (A) is branched and passed through a reaction tank 1. Calcium chloride is added to the brine in the tank 1 and reacted with sulfate radicals in the brine to form calcium sulfate dihydrate. The reaction solution is then fed to a settling tank 2, and the supernatant liquid is passed through most of the brine resaturated with a raw material salt (B') after the resaturating step (B). The joined brine is then fed to a step (C) for removing th calcium and magnesium. Sludges of the calcium sulfate dihydrate formed in the bottom of the settling tank 2 are collected in a receiving tank 3 and circulated through the reaction tank 1.
