Abstract
PURPOSE: To completely remove dithionate ions conventionally removable only by use of thermal decomposition requiring a large quantity of heat, aluminum containing coagulant and an excessive amount of alkali are used together to produce coagulated precipitate for removal.
CONSTITUTION: In treatment of waste water containing dithionate ion discharged from limestone-gypsum waste gas desulfurization process, the waste water is subjected to an alkali treatment and then filtered, thereby removing SS and heavy metals such as Fe, Mn, Al, etc. as filtered coagulated precipitate. In this stage of treatment, the waste water contains S2O6 -2 ions of a thousand and several hundreds ppm, to which is added an inorganic coagulant containing aluminum and the water is made to pH 10 or greater by adding alkali agent. This produces hardly soluble hydrated aluminate which adsorbs dithionate ions and settles as precipitate to be removed. As a result, the content of dithionate ions in the waste water falls to 10ppm or less.
