A shaft 13 is supported by air bearings 11, 12, and carries a spinning rotor 31 and a rotor 17 within stator 23 of induction motor 1. Each bearing includes a glass or plastics journal element 15 resiliently supported by rubber O-rings 16. Each bearing may be of a static or aerodynamic type, or may change from an aerostatic to an aerodynamic type as the shaft speed increases. The bearings may be arranged between the two rotors.
