Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the production of pinholes and obtain the slab of the captioned steels of good surface quality by giving the specified flow unification in the specific direction to the molten steel surface of casting mold by an electromagnetic stirrer in producing rimmed and semikilled steels through continuous casting. CONSTITUTION:In continuously casting the rimmed or semikilled steel of the specified components with a casting mold 1, an electromagnetic stirrer 3 is provided in the lower position of the casting mold 1 to give flow unification of 0.1 to 0.5m/sec in one direction perpendicular to the casting direction. As a result of experiment, the slab of the captioned steels of good surface quality free from pinholes, etc. occuring in the evolution of gas (CO+CO2) from the separately mentioned reasons are obtained. Namely, the velocities of flow of molten steel unified flow in order to make the element concentrations of (C, O) at the entire circumference of the slab at the freezing start point less than bubble nuclear producing limit through the abovementioned flow unification without requiring powerful stirring as with conventional methods were empirically determined. The upper limit 0.5m/sec is the point where inclusion of powder in the casting mold occurs.
