Abstract

A process for the production of corresion resisting steel from a mixture of liquid metal containing at least 10% chromium and 20-40% of scrap (based on the weight of liquid metal) comprises oxygen blowing upon the charge to reduce the carbon content to below 1%, the oxygen blowing is then continued with a submersed lance, preferably water cooled, to give a carbon content of less than 0.1%, the oxygen flow is then stopped, a reducing agent (e.g. one containing Si with or without Cr) is added and a fluid (e.g. air having a dew point of less than -20 DEG F. and/or argon) is introduced through the lance to cause turbulence in the slag and promote reduction of the chromium contained therein. A further 10-20% of scrap (based on the total weight of the charge) may be added when the reducing agent is added to the slag.
