Abstract

PURPOSE:To perfectly hermetically seal the package in a short time and enable its connection work to an optical fiber for transmission to be readily accomplished with good accuracy by providing a thin walled part to the lower circumference of a cap to provide a relief for thermal deformation at the flange welding. CONSTITUTION:An optical fiber 6 is fixed by sealing glass 5 to the center of a metal-made cap 1 which is formed with a thin-walled part 4 to its lower circumference. A photo semiconductor element 9 such as of LED is mounted by way of a metallized layer on the substrate 10 on the metal-made stem 7 and is connected to lead terminals 11. The flange part 3 of the cap 1 and the flange part 8 of the stem 7 are opposedly disposed and the cap 1 and stem 7 are so aligned that the fiber 6 and element 9 assume the position of the maximum coupling efficiency, thence the flange parts 3, 8 are electrically welded. Such photo semicoductor element package is mounted via heat radiating sheet 12 onto the support base 14 on a chassis 15 by means of the connector consisting of the core 18 fixed with an optical fiber 20 for transmission and a cap nut 17.
