Abstract

PURPOSE:To enable airtightness to be surely maintained without degrading transmission efficiency and the finest coupling efficiency to ne readily achieved for the photo semiconductor element by fixing an optical fiber of a single constitution by means of sealing glass into a cap. CONSTITUTION:A photo semiconductor element 12 is mounted via metallized layer onto the support plate 13 on a metal-made stem 5 and its respective electrodes are connected to the lead terminals 6 which are hermetically sealed by sealing glass 24. An optical fiber 17 corresponding to a core member is fixed in a cap 4 formed with screw 15 for connecting to a connector by means of sealing glass 14 of a refractive index lower than the refractive index of the fiber 17 in such a manner that its one end face positions above the element 6 and the other end exposes to the opening part 33 of a protrusion 16 for fitting to the connector. Following to this, the fiber 17 exposed on the opening 33 is flat-polished. Next, the cap 4 and stem 5 are aligned in such a manner that the fiber 17 assumes the optimum position with respect to the element 12 and the circumferential edge parts are electrically welded.
