Abstract
PURPOSE: To easily perform narrow-gap welding and dispense with causing an operator to always supervise it, by providing a profiling detector to measure the distance between th detector and prepared edges and applying a detection signal to position a welding nozzle in the center of the narrow gap.
CONSTITUTION: The profiling detector 14 is attached to the tip of an arm 19 secured to a welding torch 15. The detector 14 comprises a core 1, heat-resisting ceramic bobbins fitted on both the sides of the core 1, energization primary coils 3, 3' and detection secondary coils 4, 4' provided in the bobbins, and a heat-resisting Al2O3-SiO2 fixation agent for fixing the coils. The profiling detector 14 is moved in the narrow gap ahead of the welding torch 15. A high-frequency current of 20 kHz and 10mA is caused to flow through the primary coils 3, 3' of the detector. The positon of the detector in the gap is discriminated in terms of the difference between the voltages induced in the secondary coils 4, 4' due to that between the positions of the end faces of the detector 14 relative to the prepared edges. The welding torch 15 is moved so that the difference between said voltages is eliminated. The welding nozzle is thus always positioned in the center of the gap.
