Abstract
PURPOSE: To reduce the amount of noxious uncombusted components contained in exhaust gas of an internal combustion engine, by providing in the exhaust system a means for producing swirl in the combustion chamber by combusted gas flowing back into the combustion chamber, and thereby improving combustion of mixture, in particular, in low-load operational range of engine.
CONSTITUTION: On the wall of combustion chamber 4, there is formed a swirl producing guide wall 14 for producing swirl of combusted gas flowing back into combustion chamber 4 through exhaust passage 10 when valve opening time of intake valve 12 and that of exhaust valve 13 are overlapped. Reflection flow of combusted gas flowing back into combustion chamber 4 through exhaust passage 10 and colliding onto an arcuate inner surface of guide wall 14 is converged and flows in combustion chamber 4 in a strong swirl directed in the same direction. In particular, when engine is operated in its low-load operational range, fresh mixture introduced into cumbustion chamber 4 is governed by the swirl of back-flow combusted gas since the amount of intake air is small, and resultantly, the back-flow combusted gas fresh mixture mixed together flow in combustion chamber 4 forming a strong swirl therein.
