Abstract

PURPOSE: To produce the hollow ingot ideal for the outside layer material of composite roll by coating a water-cooled core by a heat insulating material and letting molten metal freeze in one direction to the direction of the core from the mold.
CONSTITUTION: The producing device is constituted by the water-cooled mold 2 installed on a water-cooled molding board 8 and the water-cooled core 3 placed therein. A consumable electrode 1 is disposed within the annular cavity delineated by the inside wall of the water-cooled mold 2 and water-cooled core 3. Th outside surface of the water-cooled 3 is coated by heat-resistant heat insulating material 4. In production, the molten metal 6 formed under slag bath 5 is heat-insulated on the water-cooled core 3 side and is force-cooled on the water-cooled mold 2 side and therefore while the freezing progresses from one end toward the other end, a hollow ingot 7 is continuously formed. Thereby, the hollow ingot provided with unidirectional frozen texture is produced and since the cooling effect by the water-cooled core is suppressed, the temperature decrease of the slag bath may be reduced and thermal efficiency improved.
