PURPOSE:To improve auto track characteristics in slow, still and fast reproduction by making it possible to set a reproduction speed, equivalent to that in recording, by switching by deciding the tape speed in recording by detecting whether the envelope output of a reproduction output changes. CONSTITUTION:In helical scan VTR provided with a tracking unit which moves further a head to a position parallel to a track by bimorph elements, etc., corresponding to a mode, a reproduction output is integrated by integrator 37, whose output is applied to Schmitt circuit 38. As a result, circuit 38 generates a differential output corresponding to variation in the envelope waveform of the reproduction output so far as a tape speed in reproduction does not correspond to that in recording. This output is stored via FF39 and according to the output of FF39, the reproduction tape speed is controlled to let the reproduction tape speed, etc., correspond to a selected recording tape speed among different recording tape speeds, so that still reproduction, slow reproduction and fast reproduction will come into effect at high S/N with excellent tracking characteristics.
