Abstract

According to a shift of the head 11, the peak is detected 20 for the signal to be reproduced. A tracking control circuit 19 stops the head 11 at the peak position of the signal. In case no peak value is detected although the head 11 is shifted up to a prescribed limit position 32, the head 11 is shifted backward up to the opposite limit position 32 and in the inhibition state for detection of the peak value. After this, the shift of the head 11 is controlled again for detection of the peak value in the original direction. In such way, the tracking control is carried out.
