Abstract

PURPOSE: To provide a highly waterproof temperature sensor useful to detect the temperature of a bath or the like, by filling a container with a termosensitive substance which changes from an opaque state into a transparent state at a detected temperature and by inserting a light irradiation member for irradiating light upon the thermosensitive substance and a light receiving member which receives the incident light from the light irradiation member, into the container.
CONSTITUTION: A temperature sensor comprises an enclosed container 1 made of a material of high thermal conductivity, a reflector 2 placed on the inside surface of the bottom of the container, a pair of optical fiber units 5, 6, etc. A thermosensitive substance 3 such as heptadecylic acid, which changes from an opaque solid into a transparent liquid when the temperature of the substance exceeds its boiling point of about 60°C, is filled in the enclosed container 1. The substance turns transparent around an objective detected temperature. Light emitted from a light emitting diode LED is transmitted through the optical fiber unit 5. When the thermosensitive substance 3 is transparent, the light is conducted to the reflector 2 and transmitted through the substance and the other optical fiber unit 6 and reaches a phototransistor PT which detects the light.
