Abstract
PURPOSE:To enable the prevention of cooling and oxidation of molten metal by using a calcined product or soot ash having a specific particle size which ia obtainable through high-temperature incineration of the waste sludge from paper making process of paper and pulp. CONSTITUTION:The waste sludge discharged from paper making process of paper and pulp is fired at about 600-1,000 deg.C (about 300-1,000 deg.C by conventional methods). The resulted calcined product or soot ash of <20mm grain size is used as the heat insulating material for a molten metal. The soot of the ash obtainable by this method consists essentially of coke material and is hardly combustible because it is produced by a quick heating process. Hence, if this is added to the surface of the molten metal to form a covering layer, the covering layer maintains difficult solubility to retard the consumption of C for a long time and this makes possible to maintenance the molten metal surface in a reducing atmosphere for a long period of time.
