Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve torsional and power transmitting performance of a flexible shaft greatly, by shaping core-metal constituting steel wire with a circular cross section while shaping steel wires wound successively around the core metal with an elliptic or a cross section in the form of an elongated circle.
CONSTITUTION: A flexible shaft is constituted by winding steel wires around core metal 1 alternately in the right and left directions, in the manner forming layers of steel wire around the core metal 1. Here, steel wire having a circular cross section is used for core metal 1 as in the conventional arrangememtns, whereas steel wires 13, 14 to be wound successively around metal core 1 are shaped to have an elliptic cross section or a cross section in the form of an elongated circle. By employing such an arrangement, twisting and power transmitting performance of the flexible shaft can be improved considerably. Further, such a flexible shaft can be manufactured more economically and to have a diameter smaller than the conventional ones having the same torsional and power transmitting performance.
