Abstract

PURPOSE: To grind a chill cam for an engine valve gear at a high accuracy in a short period of time, by stopping the cam in the manner such as to set its round base portion at a grinding starting point, advancing a rotating grindstone into the round base portion to cut it to a predetermined depth, and turning the cam for one round in one direction while retaining the grindstone in the mentioned advanced state.
CONSTITUTION: A cam 1 is stopped such as to set its round base portion 1b in a grinding starting point, and a grindstone 2 is then rotated. The rotating grindstone 2 is then advanced as it is rotated, into the round base portion 1b to cut it to a predetermined depth. The cam 1 is truned at least at 180° in one direction while retaining the grindstone in the mentioned advanced state, to remove a circumferential portion of the cam 1, which is shaded with diagonal lines, and thereby completing a rough grinding operation. The cam 1 is thereafter turned again at least ar 180° to subject it to a spark-out processing, i.e. a finishing grinding operation.
