Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain the title substance which is an intermediate for isoquinoline derivatives useful as analgesics and anti-inflammatory agents, by reacting a specific homophthalic diester with a lower alkyl halide, and if necessary hydrolyzing the reaction product.
CONSTITUTION: A homophthalic diester of formula I (R1 and R2 are H, halogen, hydroxyl, lower alkoxy, or lower alkyl groups; R3 and R4 are groups releasable by hydrolysis) is reacted with a lower alkyl halide of the formula R5-X (R5 is lower alkyl group; X is halogen) e.g. methyl iodide or bromide, in an almost equimolar amount, in an organic solvent, e.g. dimethylformamide, in the presence of a base, e.g. sodium hydride, preferably under cooling, to form an α-alkylhomophthalic acid or its diester of formula II (R6 is H or R3; R7 is H or R4).
