Abstract
PURPOSE: To prepare high purity methylphenols under mild conditions, in high yield, by reducing a specific phenol derivative with hydrogen in the presence of a catalyst comprising palladium and tetrafluoroboric acid, tetraphenylboric acid, etc.
CONSTITUTION: A methylphenol derivative of formula III (e.g. 2-methylphenol) is prepared by reducing a formylphenol derivative of formula I (R is alkyl or alkoxy; n is 1 or 2; m is 0, 1 or 2) (e.g. 2-formylphenol) or a hydroxymethylphenol derivative of formula II (e.g. 2-hydroxymethylphenol), with hydrogen, in the presence of a catalyst comprising palladium and a compound selected from tetrafluoroboric acid, tetraphenylboric acid, perchloric acid, and hexafluorophosphoric acid. The partial pressure of hydrogen is ≤10atm., and the reaction temperature is between room temp. and 80°C.
USE: Raw material of plasticizer and organic chemicals.
