Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain a polyimidophenol compound which cures into a product with excellent heat resistance within a short time at relatively low temperatures, by reacting a hydroxyimide compound with an aldehyde.
CONSTITUTION: A polyimidophenol compound represented by formula II, wherein n≥0, is obtained by reacting a hydroxyimide compound represented by formula I, wherein A is an ethylenically unsaturated group with an aldehyde in the presence of an acidic catalyst such as oxalic acid or acetic acid or an inorganic acid such as hydrochloric acid or phosphoric acid. The polyimidophenol thus produced has a novel chemical structure. As the hydroxyimide compounds used, there can be mentioned N-(o-hydroxyphenyl)maleimide and N-(p-hydroxyphenyl)tetrahydrophthalimide. Particularly useful polyimidophenol compounds are those of formula II, wherein the hydroxyl group is ortho to the methylene group.
