Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an aromatic ketone in high yield by a very simple operation, without forming a large amount of waste acids, by the reaction of an aromatic hydrocarbon or its substituted compound with an acylating agent using Fe ethylenediaminetetraacetate as a catalyst.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic ketone, e.g. 3,4-dimethylbenzophenone, is obtained by the thermal condensation of an aromatic hydrocarbon, e.g. o-xylene, toluene, 1- methylnaphthalene, etc., or its substitured compound (except the inert substituted compound having only electrophilic substituent groups) with an acylating agent, e.g. benzoyl chloride, chloroacetyl chloride etc., in the presence of a catalytic amount of Fe ethylenediaminetetraacetate (c.a. 0.02 mol per 1 mol of the acylating agent).
