Abstract

PURPOSE: To improve stability of rotation at the idling operation of engine of the type which is operated with a reduced number of operative cylinders, by interconnecting the second flywheel to the crank shaft at the time when the engine is operated with a reduced number of cylinders, and thereby increasing the rotational moment of inertia.
CONSTITUTION: A typical flywheel 3 and clutch 4 are attached to crank shaft 2 of engine 1. The first pulley 5 is also attached to the crank shaft 2 and it is connected operatively with the second pulley 6 by means of belt 7. Further, the second flywheel 8 is provided for co-operation with the second pulley 6 by aid of electromagnetic clutch 9. With such an arrangement, when the engine is operated with a reduced number of operative cylinders, the electromagnetic clutch 9 is excited for coupling the second flywheel 8 to the crank shaft 2.
