Abstract

PURPOSE: To obtain free-cutting steel powder in which the desulfurization does not occur in sintering, by containing a specified amount of S in the steel, and containing Mn slightly more than the Mn amount required to balance with the S amount as MnS, and grinding by atomization.
CONSTITUTION: S is contained in steel by 0.15W0.5wt%, and Mn is added by excess of 0.3wt% than the amount of Mn required to balance with said S as MnS. This steel is ground by atomization, and raw material steel powder for sintered product is obtained. When atomizing, oxidation of Mn which may reduce the MnS does not occur, and the excess Mn prevents decomposition of MnS and oxidation of Mn. The quantity of S necessary for free-cutting property exists in the form of MnS, so that deterioration of free-cutting property of sintered product due to desulfurization of S and damage of sintering furnace due to desulfurized S may be prevented.
