Abstract
PURPOSE: To raise the compressiblity of steel powder by controlling N-pick-up at a specifically small amount in the manufacture of a Cr-stainless steel powder for a powder metallurgical raw material.
CONSTITUTION: A Cr-stainless steel powder containing 0.04% C, 0.5W2.0% Si, 0.6% Mn, and 11W21% Cr is melted in an atmosphere of Ar gas and then atomized by water to manufacture a steel powder for powder metallurgy, where the intrusion of air is completely shut out and N-pick-up is suppressed to control the content of N to 0.03% or less. Or, besides the said composition, one or two or more of ferrite- forming elements, e.g., Mo, Ti, V, Zr, Nb, Sn, etc., may be added. By lessening the amount of austenite-forming elements, e.g., C, N, etc., as much as possible, the formation of residual austenite can be suppressed and the use of the material as a raw material for powder metallurgy enables one to make the density of sintered product higher because of its excellent compressibility and thereby to raise the hardness and toughness of the product.
