Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain an optical active alcohol in high optical yields useful as a preparative intermediate for a drug, spice, etc., by reducing a ketone compound with a metallic boron hydride compound in the presence of a specific sugar in an inert organic solvent.
CONSTITUTION: A ketone compound shown by the formula I (R is alkyl; R2 is aryl) is reduced with a metallic foron hydride (e.g., sodium boron hydride) in the presence of a sugar in an inert organic solvent to give the desired compound shown by the formula II (asterisk is asymmetric carbon atom) A monosaccharide and a polysaccharide may be used as the sugar, preferably the monosaccharide, e.g., 1,4:3,6-dianhydro-D-sorbital. The amount of the sugar to be used is double the molar quantity of the compound of I when the sugar has one OH and equimolar quantity when it has two OH. The use of a carboxylic acid, a metallic halide (e.g., aluminum halide) together with the sugar raises the yields.
