Abstract

PURPOSE: To prepare aldehydes easily in high yield under mild conditions, by reducing 3-acylthiazolidine-2-thiones, which are new carboxylic acid derivatives, with a specific A1 compound.
CONSTITUTION: Aldehydes of formula II are produced by reducing 3-acylthiazolidine-2-thiones of formula I (R1 is hydrocarbon which may have inert substituents) with an organoalminum monohydride or double compound thereof, followed by the hydrolysis. Desirably, the inert substituents of R1 do not contain active hydrogen atoms. The compounds of formula I are easily produced by adding twice moles of triethylamine to dichloromethane solution of an equimolar mixture of the corresponding carboxylic acid, thiazoline-2-thione and 2-chloro-1-methylpyridinium iodide at room temperature. The reducing agent is, e.g. the Al compound of formula III (R2 is lower alkyl), etc.
