Abstract

PURPOSE: An optically inactive β-lactam type antibiotic is acylated by the action of a specific microorganism to produce an optically active β-lactam type biotic.
CONSTITUTION: The reaction between an acid of formula I (R is acyl group) or its reactive derivative and a chemically cynthesized d1-compound of formula II (Z is hydrocarbyl chain of 2 or 3 carbon atoms forming ring A of 5W6 member, in which one carbon may be replaced with oxygen or sulfur atom) is effected in the presence of the culture mixture of a microorganism belonging to Pseudomonas, Bacillus, Alcaligenes, Escherichia, Kluyveromyces or Proteus, e.g., Alcaligenes faecalis ATCC-25094 or its processed product to produce said optically active isomer of formula III.
