Abstract
PURPOSE: To supercharge a diesel engine to suit various operational conditions of engine by use of a proper number of superchargers, by arranging the superchargers in a plurality of stages, and providing a selector valve for each stage of superchargers.
CONSTITUTION: High-pressure superchargers HI, HII and low-pressure superchargers LI, LII are connected to engine E. Blowers HIb, LIb and HIIb, LIIb of these superchargers are both arranged in series and connected to intake passage 6 via intake-air reservoir. Likewise, turbines HIt, LIt and HIIt, LIIt are both arranged in series and connected to exhaust passage 5 via exhaust-gas reservoirs 7, 8. Further, selector valves 1W4 are provided respectively in branched intake and exhaust passages, and these selector valves are controlled by a pressure switch 10 which is acted by the intake pressure. In the above arrangement, the number of superchargers to be operated is determined depending on the operational condition of engine E. In each intake passage, there is provided a cooler C.
