Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:A gluconic loctam derivative shown by the formula I ( R is benzyl or benzoyl; X is H or OH).
USE: A synthetic intermediate of moranoline useful as a drug.
PROCESS: For example, 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-benzylglucose is oxidized with DMSO and acetic anhydride to give 2,3,4,6-tetra-O-bnenylgluconic acid-γ-lactone, which is treated with a methanol having a catalytic amount of hydrogen chloride to open lactone ring and to prepare a hydroxy-methyl ester compound. Hydroxyl groups of the compound are oxidized by DMSO and acetic anhydride to form a 2,3,4,6-tetra -O- benzyl-5-ketogluconic acie methyl ester shown by the formula II. The compound is changed into an oxime or imine, which is reduced to give a compound shown by tbe formula III among compounds shown by formula I.
