NEW MATERIAL:cis-2,3-Epoxy-4-lower alkoxyphenylbutanoic acid derivatives of formula I (R1 is lower alkoxy; R2 is protecting group for carboxy1).
EXAMPLE: cis-2,3-Epoxy-4-p-methoxyphenylbutanoic methyl ester.
USE: Synthetic intermediate of 3-amino-2-hydroxy-4-p-hydrophenylbutanoic, which is used for synthesizing 3-amino-2-hydroxy-4-p-hydroxyphenylbutanoic acid-(S)- leucine having an activity of inhibiting hydrolases such as aminopeptidase B or leucineamino-peptidase.
PREPARATION: A cis-lower alkoxyphenyl-2-butenoic acid derivative of formula II is epoxidized with an organic peracid such as m-chlorobenzoic peracid or trifluoroacetic peracid to form the compound of formula I.
