Abstract

PURPOSE: To enhance the brake performance and wear resistance of a brake-shoe by blending cast iron dust with a friction material consisting of a solid lubricant, a metal lubricant and a grinding material followed by sintering.
CONSTITUTION: Cast iron dust as a binder is blended with a predetermined amt. of a solid lubricant such as graphite or MoS2, a metal lubricant such as Bi or Pb, and a grinding material such as ZrO2, and this blend is sintered. Cutting scraps can be used as the binder as principal starting material for the resulting brake- shoe, so the cost is reduced, and this brake-shoe contributes to effective utilization of resources due to recycling of industrial waste. This brake-shoe is comparable to conventional one in coefficients of friction and adhesion, and it has reduced quantity of friction and improved wear resistance.
