Abstract
PURPOSE: A scale inhibitor to prevent very effectively the formation of the scale of CaCO3 or the rigid scale of CaSO4 from hard water, consisting of a specific acrylic hydrazide copolymer.
CONSTITUTION: A scale inhibitor consisting of the acrylic hydrazide copolymer of the formula. To a polymer(copolymer), as, for example, of acryl amide, acrylic ester, etc., an aqueous solution of an alkaline substance, e.g., KOH, etc., equivalent to amide or ester group which is to be hydrolyzed is added to hydrolyze 20 to 60% of amide or ester group. Then, the COOH group of the copolymer thus hydrolyzed is neutralized by an alkaline substance to carboxylic acid salt, and then 80 wt % hydrazine hydrate aqueous solution, corresponding to 5 to 50 mol times as much as amide or ester group present in the molecule, is added for further reaction. Then, the reactant mixture is poured to a lower alcohol of approx. 10 times as much as the mixture to precipitate it and then purified. Thus, the subject acrylic hydrazide copolymer can be obtained in the form of dry powder or aqueous solution.
