Abstract
PURPOSE: To obtain a gel useful as a water absorbing agent of soil, etc., by reacting an aqueous solution of polyacrylic acid hydrazide compound with an acid anhydride, epihalohydrin, maleic anhydride polymer, etc. at a specific temperature, and gelatinizing the reaction product in a short time.
CONSTITUTION: An aqueous solution of polyacrylamide is reacted with an aqueous solution of hydrazine hydrate under agitation and heating, and the reaction mixture is poured into methanol to form a precipitate. The resultant precipitate is then purified by the reprecipitation method to give a polyacrylic acid hydrazide compound of the formula (X is H or carboxyl group; Y is H or methyl; A is acrylamide unit, etc.; B is acrylic ester, etc.; l+m+n is 100mol%). At least one of an acid anhydride, epihalohydrin, maleic anhydride polymer, etc. is added to the aqueous solution and reacted at 0W100°C to gelatinize the solution.
