Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:Fatty acid having sulfur-substitution group at α-position, of formula I (R is alkyl; X is alkylmercapto, alkylsulfinyl, alkylsulfonyl), or its salt.
EXAMPLE: α-Methylmercapto-lauric acid sodium salt.
USE: A soap derived from a fatty acid having sulfur-substitution group at α-position has improved hard water resistance, high activity at a low concentration, high stability, and excellent dispersibility, anti-corrosiveness, and emulsifying power.
PROCESS: The coppound I (X is alkylmercapto) is prepared by(1) reacting, e.g. an acid II (-SR' is alkylmercapto) with H2O2 and acetic acid, and (2) reacting the resultant compound III with a compound MOH (M is a salt-forming cation which gives a soap by reacting with a fatty acid).
