Abstract
PURPOSE: To provide an apparatus for returning part of filthy water subjected to aeration into the layer of settled sludge or scum, which is also capable of applying denitrification treatment to the filthy water with no use of a special denitrification tank.
CONSTITUTION: Filthy water is introduced from filthy water inlet pipe 8 into a first sedimentation tank 3, where solid matters are separated into sludge layer or scum layer. Then, liquid component in the tank 3 is introduced via transfer pipe 9 into aeration tank 5, where it is aerated with air supplied from aerating means 12. Liquid thus purified is introduced into a second sedimentation tank 6 from the lower end of partition plate 4, and treated liquid is discharged via pipe 11 after it is treated in disinfecting tank 7. A portion of treated water subjected to aeration (containing nitric or nitrous nitrogen) is drawn from an upper portion of sedimentation tank 6 and introduced into sludge layer 16 in the first sedimentation tank 3 via pump 13, return pipe 14, whereby liquid is denitrified by denitrifying bacteria contained in the sludge layer 16.
