Abstract

PURPOSE:To obtain a polymer insulated cable having a high dielectric strength, by forming an insulation shield layer with extrusion thickening of the layer to a given wall thickness. CONSTITUTION:The insulation shield layer 5, e,g. a semiconductive composition comprising polyethylene, ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer, carbon black, and a cross-linking agent, and the insulating layer 8 are coextruded on the conductor 3 while making the clearance between the tip of the middle nip 2 and the conductor 3 d to adjust the difference (D-d) between the thickness D after the extrusion thickening and d to 0.2-1.5 mm, preferably 0.3-1.0 mm. The impulse dielectric strength is about 20% higher than that of the cable of the same thickness free from extrusion thickening.
