Abstract

PURPOSE:To process easily the terminal of polymer clad fiber suited to production of optical connector, by hardening the clad layer by radiating CO2 laser beam, utilzing the nature that the silicone resin is hardened by heating. CONSTITUTION:A polymer clad fiber 27 consisting of a core 21 and a clad 22 using flexible silicone resine is radiated with CO2 laser 23 in the clad part at the end thereof. Scanning of the fiber 27 by laser beam 24 is effected by moving the fiber 27 by means of an inching table 25, and radiation of beam 24 into the clad part not to be hardened is prevented by a mask 26. The fiber 27 thus hardened 22' in the end part of the flexible clad 22 is secured in a sleeve 28 with adhesive 29, and the end thereof is ground together with the sleeve 28.
