Abstract
PURPOSE: To accomplish an efficient, economic production of a fibrous gypsum of good quality by bringing CaSO4 into hydrothermal reaction in a solution containing an acid below a specified concentration under a pressure within a specified range of temperature.
CONSTITUTION: The material for the gypsum employes ordinary CaSO4, mainly composed of bihydrate. The CaSO4 may contain a small amount of α-hemihydrate or III-anhydrate. This CaSO4 is added to a acidic solution with an acid component of less than 15% by weight at a ratio of 0.5 to 30 parts by weight to 100 parts. For the acid applicable is either of an organic acid such as formic acid and acetic acid or an inorganic acid such as phosphoric acid, hydrochloric acid, nitric acid and sulfuric acid. The acidic solution thus mixed with CaSO4 is brought into hydrothermal reaction at 105 to 170°C under a pressure of 1 to 7 kg/cm2 to produce a fibrous α-hemihydrous gypsum with a large value of L/D (L; length, D; diameter). The product thus obtained is allowed to dry at 60°C for about 24 hours and sintered at 500 to 800°C for about 3 hours to be converted to a fibrous II-anhydrous gypsum.
