Abstract

NEW MATERIAL:6-[α-(3-0-Hydroxybenzoyl-1-ureide)-α-phenylacetamide]penicillanic acid and its salts of formula I.
USE: Antibacterial agents having antibacterial activity against gram-positive and -negative bacteria, especially Pseudomonas. The phenolic hydroxyl group increases the bactericidal activity and lowers the toxicity. Further it is relatively stable even under acidic conditions.
PREPARATION: The reaction of novel salicyloylureidophenylacetic acid or its functional derivative such as acid anhydride or active ester with 6-aminopenicillanic acid or its functional derivative such as derivative with activated 6-amino group or protected 3-carboxyl group in a solvent such as acetone or dimethylformamide affords the compound of formula I. When the 3-carboxyl group is protected, the use of a carbodiimide as a condensation agent effects high-efficiency acylation.
